When pushing your limits sometimes you go just that little bit to far. Last week on august 15th I was sailing in Wissant (FRA). Conditions where superb, I was going out full speed, when I launched of this big wave for a stalled forward I got a gust. Normally you bail out... but I didn't. I overrotated heavily and made a nice crash. At the landing my back foot was twisted the wrong way. Doctor told me it will take at least a month to be back on a windsurfboard.

I will probably miss the Belgian Championships 1-2 september and 8-9 september. Normally my lead in slalom and formula racing is big enough to still finish the year in 1st position.

Next up then are the Slalom Worlds in Almanarre from 2nd to 7th of october. I will have some new AHD 08 boards there and lots of windsurfing energy after one month not sailing!

After Almanarre it goes straight to the "Waddeneilanden" in Holland for Oneill The Crowning. This event will be THE Belgian (wave)windsurfing event of the year. Lotzz of media and press will be present.

7-12th of october - Oneill The Crowning

Euro Cup Engadin Wind Silvaplana
added 14/08/'07

The 30th edition of the Engadin Wind Silvaplana took place from the 9th to the 12th of august. Together with Nick and Ruben we drove to Switzerland. The four days in Silvaplana were full power 100% action, on and of the water....

The first two days the wind was blowing from the wrong direction so no suitable race conditions. On thursday I was invited by the Stahlbad Hotel in St Moritz to come and talk a little about windsurfing. I went there with Nick and Ruben. We had a nice evening and it was really nice to be there and talk about our passion.

On saturday wind was still coming from the wrong direction and race comittee decided to do a funrace-slalom. I was able to win the second race holding off Jesper DEN 111 and Pont POL 126. On sunday we had excellent race conditions! After the marathon (counting as 2 euro cup races) we had two more. So in total 4 euro cup races were sailed. With a score of: 19 - 19 - 26 - 16 I ended up 20th place in overall results.

Belgian Championship FW en Slalom, Westende
added 23/07/'07

After a great party in Ostend I drove to Westend together with Nick (BEL 101) on fridaynight (or maybe saturdaymorning is a better description). Still going on the adrenaline of the party we rigged our sails at 6 o'clock in the morning, went to look for a bakery, took a red bull and we were in for action!
The wind was blowing cross offshore +- 15 knots. Ideal formula weather! We did 6 races. I was sailing the new Loft Blade Formula 11m². Amazingly light in hands going upwind like no other! Having an OCS (false start) and missing a buoy (yes maybe I was sleeping during the race) had put me in 2nd place. But forecast looked good for sunday. So with one more race we would have 2 discounts.

On Sunday we sailed 3 formula races. I won all races and secured my first place. The wind picked up and in the afternoon we were in for some slalomaction! The blade 6,8 and my Tracer 103 combined with my new MFC Slalom 34 was a great combo. First race was a bullet! After 4 races it was a tie between me and Wolfgang. (my biggest oponent in Formula and Slalom, but also good friend) Race5 was very important. At the start we took off with the 2 of us. Instantly creating a big gap with the rest of the pack. I was leading comfortably but on the last leg... the wind died... I could not plane anymore, Wolfgang took the last gust and pumped his way to victory. I finished 2nd.

This weekend proved that the belgian coast can deliver great racing conditions. My new Loft blade formula sailed super easy and light in hands. Thanks monty for making windsurfing so much fun!

In the overall rankings I'm leading the Formula, Slalom and Racing. Two more tourstops to go in september!

NK Formula/Slalom Lowlandcup Grevelingendam (NED)
added 21/05/'07

During two days of racing the Grevelingendam proved itself as the perfect race-spot when 10 races formula were completed in winds from 7 to 17 knots.

The event started on thursday but there was not enough wind to go out and race. On friday there were five formula races completed. I could only compete in 3 of them, as my mastextension broke in race2 and I could not repair it before race3. The last two races I was back out. The wind increased and sailing two races 10,7 overpowerd was quite hard. Fortunately there was RedBull to keep the energy-level up.

Saturday we did again five races of formula. Sunday no wind. > results

North Sea Cup Ostend
added 16/05/'07

Saturday we had an old skool hardcore slalom. Strong winds and big chop. Normally in this winds I go out with my Lip 3,9 and waveboard! A lot of the guys were out doing slalom on their wavegear. I was out on the Tracer79 and my Loft Blade 5,6. I trimmed the Blade 5,6 on low-medium setting. We did beachstarts so it was very important to have enough power in the shorebreak. Once out I expected to be blown away like the rest of competitors (some of them on 4,5m2) but nothing like it. The Blade velt very controlable and forgiving. I could just hang on and concentrate on keeping my board flat.

From the five full fleet slaloms that day I won three which put me in the lead on the current slalomranking.
Sunday in gusty offshore winds it was formula-time. After four races I reinforced my lead in the formularanking by taking also this event win.

Belgian Championship Formula tourstop 3
added 08/05/'07

After 2 events I'm currently leading the rankings.

Next weekend we will have the North Sea Cup in Ostend. This event is also counting for the Belgian Formula/Slalom Tour.

Winds are looking good for formula on saturday but quite strong on sunday. In the North Sea Cup format their is no maximum windlimit for formula.... we could be in for some high wind survival conditions!

But still some days to come before the event and you never know what the wind will do...

See you out there!

Belgian Championship Formula

First and Second tourstop report:

Last two weekends we had two stops on the belgian formula tour.

On the 21-22th of April we were in Duinbergen. In very light winds we could only do 1 race. I scored my first bullet of the season after a head to head battle with Wolfgang (BEL 3).
> RESULTS

Last weekend, 28-29th of April, the battle was on at the famous Grevelingendam in Holland. Saturday the wind was very gusty and race director decided not to start. On sunday we got some of the best formula conditions ever. 10-15 knots wind, blue sky and sailing in boardshort! From the six races that day I won five. > RESULTS (coming soon)

Sealpower!
added 28/01/'07

After a cold period with some snow we had surfable weather here in Belgium. I was eager to try the new Seal 88!

I sailed for 2 hours with the Lipwave 4.3 and Seal 88. Never had so much fun! The wind was blowing from the West so Duinbergen was the place to be. Some nice waves (for Belgium-standards) came in and the Seal was flying.

Surfing the Seal was a little different then the Pure I normally use. It took some time to adapt my position (because the masttrack is really far back) but once I got it surfing a wave was never this fun!

Many thanks to Nick (BEL101) to take some pictures!

Stormsurf
added 19/01/'07

Yesterday I went to check out Herkingen first. Measuring constant +50 knots on the shore and a very choppy speedcourse made us decide to look for another spot. After an hour driving and looking Benny (H57) found a great spot. (Secret)
Here the wind looked even stronger but the water was sailable. I rigged my Lip 3.9 on the XXXS custom speedboard that I could use from my friend Alain de Gendt (surfgasm.org). Benny took his Stealth 4.2 and his exo warpspeed.
On the water I never felt so much power in my sail. When you got hit by a gust your arms where simply pulled out of your body. The angle of the speedcourse was ok but at the end really choppy. My last run I did a nice crash here :)
We sailed (read: survived) for a little bit more then an hour before we called it a day. For sure another day to remember!

As it was raining and weather was not so nice so there are no pictures. BUT there is one video from Benny doing a run:

Bigger Storm ! + 60 knots wind!
added 16/01/'07

During the big storm of thursday (see news 12/01/07) most windsurfers were on their limit.
Now this thursday will be worse! An atlantic depression with winds over 60 knots will visit the benelux. Will this be surfable... I don't now... but we will try! Depending on the waveheight it will be: flying with my Lip 3.9 in Bredene or speeding with my Blade 5.1 at the famous spot; Herkingen, in Holland. Pics and video will be in gallery soon...

Blade 2007 first try! Incredible!
added 13/01/'07

Today was the first time sailing the Blade 2007. I rigged a 6.8 on my Tracer 90. Wim, my AHD teammate, was sailing his Gun MS 6.8 also on Tracer 90.
The wind was really light for 6.8. Almost unpowerd I was already killing everyone. In the afternoon the wind picked up.
To see how the Blade would sail in other hands I switched my sail with Wim.... and you can already guess who was flying now.... Wim could not believe it :-). The performance and speed off the Blade was incredible.
Next week I will have my new boards and then I can test and tune my sails a little more. But for sure this first day was really satisfying. Monty you did a great job!

Storm: gusts +50 knots!
added 12/01/'07

After a 2 hour battle with my Loft Lipwave 3.9 and AHD Pure 78 I called it a day! And what a day it was... From 10.30pm to 12.30pm sailing in stormy winds at the Twinsclub in Bredene. My loft teammate Sam B86 aka Saxo also batteling the waves. Sometimes it was more survival then windsurfing. More pictures on Sam's website.

Big storm coming for tomorrow!
added 10/01/'07
